Glemsford Logo Competition

Recently we asked residents to design a logo for use on her official correspondence.  We had a great response and after careful consideration it was agreed that the first prize should go to Mrs. Pittendrigh for her design.  Judges liked the use of the "F" to show the river.

Thank you to all those who took part in the competition.

Dog Training Classes

September will see the start of a new pet dog training club, DOG SENSE, in Glemsford.

Dog Sense, run by Jan Spackman and Julia Harrington, will hold puppy socialisation and obedience classes in Glemsford Village Hall on a Friday evening, although one-to-one advice and training can be offered privately in the home for owners who may be experiencing problems with their dogs.

Jan, who is a qualified trainer and has many years of experience behind her, says: “At Dog Sense, we look at the overall picture, taking into account the dog’s breed and the handler’s ability and requirements with a view to providing a training programme to suit them both. You have to remember that we don’t train the dogs, the handler does so it’s our job to motivate and convince people that, with a little effort, they can have a well behaved dog.”

Julia is a newer addition to the world of dog training. She is herself an experienced handler and has worked with Jan for the last 3 years. “We feel it’s important not just to ‘tell’ people how to train their dogs and hope it works, but to show them.” Both Jan and Julia have their own dogs, black Labradors Sadie 10 and Oska 5, who are well-balanced, sociable and very used to meeting new dogs and people. “Our dogs have loads of experience of working with us to break down and show training methods and techniques” explains Julia. “By watching us with our dogs, its easier for people to understand what they are supposed to do.”

Before Dog Sense opens its doors in September, both Jan and Julia are using this time to increase their knowledge not only in practical training terms by attending 2 day seminars held by renowned vet, animal behaviourist and dog trainer, Dr. Ian Dunbar, but also by attending courses in alternative and complimentary training methods.

Both trainers are able to train dogs to the standard required for the Kennel Club’s Good Citizen Dog Scheme and both their dogs are Gold standard dogs who were invited to display their abilities at Crufts in 2005. Says Jan “When we open in September we will have Listed status with the Kennel Club and achieving Bronze, Silver and Gold awards is something else will be able to offer.”

It is the aim of Dog Sense, to make people aware of their responsibilities to their dogs and to show them that they can have pet dogs who fit appropriately into their community by being well mannered and well trained.

For more information or to enrol in obedience classes, ring Jan on 01787 379556 or Julia on 01787 374556. Why not come and meet the trainers at an open day at Glemsford Village Hall on Saturday 21st July 2007 between midday and 4:00pm
